Learning is increasingly happening outside formal education, driven by online platforms, social learning content, industry-led upskilling, and short certificate programs, resulting in shifts among learner behavior and employer expectations.
Learners can now acquire knowledge and skills “on demand” through alternative pathways that offer more affordable, flexible, bite-sized online courses (HolonIQ, 2025). Employers, on the other hand, now recognize microcredentials and other substitute certifications as adequate qualifications for employment, given their focus on practical, skill-based competencies (Coursera, 2025).
Alternative learning certifications therefore fill a clear gap in the education ecosystem–offering a faster and more affordable path to employment than the traditional college degree. This contrast is made especially visible amidst global uncertainty. As the cost of a lengthy education with uncertain returns weighs heavily on students and their families, alternative learning certifications may easily become the most attractive option (Kato, et al, 2020).
What if, among the futures of education, there is one in which traditional educational institutions face stiff competition from these alternative pathways that threaten to cannibalize their student enrollment? What would this mean 30 to 50 years from now?
What would living in this version of the future look like and feel like? What would education look like in such a future?
How are we called to respond to this possible future scenario in the here and now?
